Judges’ comment “The collaborative approach to working with stakeholders stood out”Successful diversion of a large diameter sewer in Ruislip, west London, allowed High Speed 2 construction to progress and was critical to maintaining services for 150,000 households and businesses over a 10km² area.

The 21km sewer is one of the main pipelines supplying Mogden wastewater treatment works which serves 2.1M people in west London.

The project was handed over 33 days early, 8% faster than the original tender programme. It used 3D modelling to optimise coffer dam design and artificial intelligence to improve the quality of risk assessments.

Carbon saving initiatives included the use of gravity rather than pumps to enable flow diversions, reducing the fuel used.

Recycled aggregates were also used on haul roads and plant used hydrotreated vegetable oil to further reduce emissions.
