Judges’ comment “A quality product that transforms the way small projects are delivered on small, underutilised sites” Zed Pods has worked closely with Linc Cymru and Newport City Council to develop ultralow energy and low carbon social housing for people living in temporary accommodation.

Many contractors would consider the site to be undevelopable as Hill Street is on a steep slope, with narrow access in a conservation area surrounded by listed buildings.

Constraints were overcome by combining flexible design with off-site construction.

Housing modules for the 12 homes were delivered to site in three days and the overall programme was kept to 52 weeks despite the challenges posed by materials shortages and the pandemic.

The homes generate their own electricity from rooftop solar panels. Local contractors, consultants and specialists were employed to add social value.
