Judges’ comment “The scheme had significant social benefits in terms of improving accessibility and connectivity across the rail network”Installation of a passenger lift at Finsbury Park station was undertaken with no impact on rail or station operations, using more than 100 non-disruptive rail possessions.
This was despite the engineering challenge of removing 600t of excavated material from the landlocked platforms while maintaining passenger flows. The team designed a bespoke lifting stage from the platform to the road below, using the rail overbridge.
The lift adits were constructed in a confined area directly off the live station. Carbon reduction was enhanced by using electric excavators and small plant, significantly reducing exhaust and noise emissions. Battery-powered excavators saved 783.95t CO2e.
Co-location of contractor Barhale and client/designer Network Rail teams created a one-team environment, promoting transparency.
