British Construction Industry Awards 2023

Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year

This category recognises projects that are leading the field with reducing embodied carbon during the construction of new infrastructure or buildings to support the government’s target to be carbon net zero by 2050.

Winner

Strategic Pipeline Alliance – Disruptive Carbon Reduction

Judges’ comment “Excellent project which demonstrated carbon leadership in the sector”The Strategic Pipeline Alliance has used a digital twin and a disruptive challenge process to drive down carbon on Anglian Water’s project to build a £500M drinking water main grid.

This has put the team on track to reducing the project’s 309,413tCO2e carbon baseline by an expected 65% – significantly more than the 27% reduction target.

The water network will transfer 265M litres/day from wetter to drier parts of Anglian Water’s region.

The team comprising Anglian Water, Costain, Farrans, Jacobs and Mott MacDonald Bentley achieved the carbon reduction by reusing 67km of existing pipes to avoid laying new ones.

It also cut pumping and storage capacity, while using lower carbon materials and techniques.

Cloud-based optimisation software also identified steel and plastic pipes as lower carbon options than ductile iron ones. Modelling improved the e›ciency of operating the water network.
