Future of Rail | Railway route restoration
Leveraging benefits for Levenmouth
While the Restoring Your Railway funding may have stimulated renewed interest in reviving old railway lines, there are other similar projects that have come through other routes to reach the construction phase.
One of the most significant predates Restoring Your Railway and is the £116M Levenmouth Link (NCE, September 2022). This is being funded by Transport Scotland and was first announced in 2019 before moving to the construction phase in January 2022.
The work involves restoring double track on the 9.5km route, plus two new railway stations at Leven and Cameron Bridge, which is expected to be completed by spring next year.
The work is being delivered by an enterprise partnership formed by Atkins, AmcoGiffen, Bam Nuttall, QTS, Network Rail, Rail Systems Alliance Scotland, Scottish Power Lines, Siemens and Story Contracting.
Work on restoring the track and the structures on the route is progressing well and Bam Nuttall started work on construction of the Cameron Bridge station in January.
Network Rail project manager for the Levenmouth Rail Link Tommy McPake says: “While work is progressing well on track elements of the new line, the stations will be the gateway to the rail network for local people and it is great to get work moving on what will be the public facing elements of the project.
“In the coming months, the community will see a lot of work happening and quickly as the project gathers momentum and starts to build towards the opening of the line in spring 2024.”
