In the 1960s, the cost of running the UK’s rail network led to a large number of local lines being axed. But while questions about the financial viability of High Speed 2 remain, the role of local rail routes as key connectivity providers is being recognised. New light rail solutions could hold the key for urban transport, while for some areas the idea of restoring old routes is gaining popularity.
