ICE rebalances professional review programme following pandemic

The ICE is rebalancing its professional review programme to reflect the changing needs of its membership following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Professional review programme changes mean there will be more in-person reviews

The changes will include increasing the number of in-person reviews and come into effect after the March 2024 session.

During the pandemic, the ICE had to move rapidly to provide frequent, online-only reviews.

While these measures were needed at the time, it is now felt that they should be adapted to reflect current circumstances.

A survey conducted last year with responses from over 1,200 members and other stakeholders has clarified needs and priorities for the review community.

The results have shaped how the programme will change.

It was clear from feedback that online and in-person reviews are needed and that more in-person support for reviewer training and development is required.

Based on the feedback, the ICE is to adopt the following changes after March 2024:

  • Review sessions will be held three times a year in February, June and October
  • At least one week in each session will be in-person. Other weeks will be online
  • In-person reviewer training, briefings and workshops will run at the same time.

London will be the main location for in-person reviews, but there will be additional in-person sessions at other UK and overseas locations.

The new approach will set a more stable pace for the programme while continuing to offer candidates regular opportunities to sit a review.

ICE Professional Reviews Panel co-chairs Caroline Tong and Alistair Hitchcock thanked survey respondents and everyone who responded to changing needs during the pandemic.

“We trust that the changes we have announced will give everyone involved confidence that the ICE has listened and that the reviews programme is being reset to meet our current and future needs,” they said.

ICE knowledge programmes revamp

Restructuring to help ICE deliver its five-year plan by giving members better access to knowledge events and relevant content.

ICE Council has restructured its Community Advisory Boards (CABs) and Knowledge Networks to improve the delivery of content, research and activity.

The aim is for the CABs and Knowledge Networks to be better set up to support the delivery of the ICE’s five-year plan.

Seven strategic CABs relating to key five-year plan priorities have been established. These are:

  • Decarbonisation
  • Productivity
  • Sustainable, resilient infrastructure
  • Low carbon energy
  • Transport and mobility
  • Water and sanitation
  • Engineering fundamentals.

The revamp will help the ICE deliver its five year plan

Each CAB is led by specialists and works to help the ICE create engaging knowledge programmes for members.

The aim is to ensure that each week, regardless of position or experience, members can access at least one knowledge event or piece of content that is relevant to them.

They also support the development of strategic insight reports, identify gaps in knowledge and propose new content, events or activities.

Every CAB is now supported by corresponding Knowledge Networks, which are designed to engage a wider range of specialists in delivering the ICE’s plan.

Members and infrastructure specialists on the Knowledge Networks will collaborate on and contribute to the research and development of content for the ICE’s key programmes.

ICE members, and nonmembers who work on the construction, design and management of infrastructure projects are eligible to join Knowledge Networks.
