Student explains CityZen career inspiration

Second year University of Southampton civil engineering student and Quest Scholarship recipient Joe Dixon, has explained how the ICE’s digital CityZen game encouraged him to pursue a career in civil engineering.

Dixon: Inspired by CityZen game

The game gets school students to tackle challenges faced by civil engineers every day, in a digital environment.

In a blog post for the ICE website, Dixon writes that he loved mathematics and physics as a child.

He adds that geography, history and French classes taught him about how people interact with each other.

He realised the civil engineering is a career that can combine his love of problem-solving with his interest in people’s lives.

Dixon’s A-level physics teacher told him about the ICE CityZen competition, sparking his interest in the game.

“I loved the real examples of decisions that civil engineers get to make every day. I was particularly surprised by how closely intertwined the gameplay was with my geography lessons in how big a role human experience plays in a ‘good’ design decision.”
