First Chartered Infrastructure Engineer named

Aecom decarbonisation technical director Chris Landsburgh has been awarded the new title of Chartered Infrastructure Engineer.

Landsburgh: New title is an honourThe protected title is the first to have been created in 100 years.

Landsburgh was a President’s Future Leader under ICE past president Paul Sheffield.

The Chartered Infrastructure Engineer title was introduced in response to recommendations made by civil engineer and barrister John Uff in his 2016 review of UK engineering.

Uff had observed that many engineers were operating outside the professional engineering institution structure. He recommended that they become professionally qualified to assure the public that infrastructure engineers are current, credible and competent.

The introduction of the Chartered Infrastructure Engineer title was approved by ICE members in 2022.

The new title allows the ICE to professionally qualify engineers involved in all aspects of infrastructure. The title also acknowledges the sector’s changing needs.

“The ICE has been one of my professional homes for several years and becoming the first Chartered Infrastructure Engineer is an honour,” said Landsburgh.

Board level design champion should be legal requirement

Appointing a board level design champion should be a legal requirement for all major infrastructure projects, according to research commissioned by the ICE on behalf of the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC).

Creating this role and building it into consent processes such as development consent order applications would help keep good design high on project agendas.

ICE Fellow Tim Chapman is leading a steering group which will drive the project forward.
