Staggering Stonehenge Tunnel price

The recent decision to proceed with the very high cost Stonehenge Tunnel project, priced at £2.4bn, is quite amazing and very difficult to justify.

Stonehenge Tunnel: Could a well designed, landscaped solution work just as well?

During my career I was involved in the planning, design and construction of many trunk road and motorway schemes in the North East, South West and South East Road Construction Units, including acting as the secretary of state’s representative and chief witness at a number of public inquiries.

As project managers for a variety of A30 projects between Exeter and Penzance, we were required to calculate the economic rate of return (ERR) for each project to, hopefully, qualify for its inclusion in the national road building programme.

What is the ERR for the Stonehenge Project?

As part of the planning stage, we would invite the Landscape Advisory Committee to inspect a number of route alternatives to obtain its views in this respect. The committee was made up of a variety of talented and well respected people including landscape architects. Their views and recommendations were taken on board in choosing the final route to be published which inevitably went to public inquiry, often disrupted by action groups requiring police attendance.

A well designed and landscaped surface route is what is required at Stonehenge, costing a fraction of the staggeringly expensive £2.4bn proposal.
