ICE in virtual work experience initiative

Online programme is designed to encourage young people between 14 and 18 years old to take up careers in civil engineering.

Young people considering a career in engineering will have the opportunity to undertake virtual work experience as a result of a new ICE initiative.

Civil Engineers: Shaping the World is a virtual work experience programme which has been launched to inspire young people to take up careers in civil engineering.

The initiative is aimed at 14 to 18 year olds

The programme highlights the diverse ways in which the profession protects people and the planet and helps tackle misconceptions about who civil engineers are and what they do.

Blake Scott, one of the ICE President’s Future Leaders and an assistant consultant at WSP, helped design the programme.

He said it is a “fantastic” opportunity for young people to engage with the civil engineering sector.

He added: “As a Future Leader, I was excited to work on the programme to ensure that it demonstrates how civil engineers are building a better society using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“This expansion of the ICE’s education activities is a brilliant opportunity for young people to showcase their ideas and potential through the interactive tasks on offer in the programme.”

Civil Engineers: Shaping the World is open to UK-based students aged 14 to 18 years old. The work experience takes around 10 hours to complete and can be done at the individual’s own pace.

Scott said he hoped the programme will help increase numbers and diversity of young people entering the profession. “We know that young people’s involvement is fundamental to finding solutions to some of society’s most critical issues,” he said.

Education specialist, Springpod, will host the programme on its website.
